What types of hardwood flooring are available?

Hardwood flooring comes in three distinct types: solid wood, engineered wood, and long-strip flooring. These types differ in their manufacturing process, which affects where they can be installed and how often they can be refinished.

  • Solid Wood Flooring: As the name suggests, solid wood flooring is made from a single piece of wood with tongue-and-groove sides.
  • Engineered Wood Flooring: This type is created by stacking thin layers of wood together to form a single plank.
  • Long-Strip Flooring: Similar to engineered wood, long-strip flooring is also made by layering thin wood pieces to create a plank.

Each type has unique characteristics that influence its suitability for different environments and its longevity.

What is luxury vinyl flooring?

Luxury vinyl flooring, also known as LVP, is composed of multiple layers of materials, including vinyl. The most common type of vinyl flooring includes four layers:

  • Backing Layer: Made from felt, fiberglass, or vinyl, this layer provides stability and support.
  • Core Layer: This layer adds durability and structure to the flooring.
  • Decorative Layer: This layer features the flooring pattern or design, giving the floor its appearance.
  • Wear Layer: The top layer protects the flooring from scratches and scuffs, ensuring long-lasting durability.

What types of carpets are available?

Carpet offers a wide range of options, but they can generally be divided into three basic categories based on the surface characteristics, known as the “pile.” The pile is the visible, wearable surface made up of tufts of yarn. The three main types of carpet pile are:

  • Cut Pile
  • Loop Pile
  • Cut and Loop Pile

Each type has distinct textures and durability, suitable for different needs and preferences.

Why would I choose laminate over real wood?

Laminate flooring provides homeowners with the appearance of real wood at a more budget-friendly price. It’s also more durable than wood, offering better resistance to dents and scratches. Plus, laminate can be installed in areas where hardwood isn’t suitable, such as bathrooms or basements.
